Not much can top an evening with Aaron Lee Tasjan. Except maybe an evening with ALT, Jessye DeSilva, Rich Hinman and Molly Martin.
On a chilly “spring” night at the Middle East Upstairs, Tasjan rolled into town touring behind his fresh-off-the-press release Stellar Evolution, which is (obviously) stellar in every way. ALT’s set, deeply rooted in his trademark sound that combines witty lyrics with infectious grooves, featured a mix of tracks off the new release and all-time favorites while showcasing his ability to blend serious musicianship with an almost theatrical flair.
And as if getting to catch ALT wasn’t special enough, he was joined on stage by local singer-songwriter Jessye DeSilva—with whom ALT will soon be recording an album—and string slayer/Berklee Assistant Professor/guitar tech Rich Hinman. Not too shabby for a Tuesday night.
Molly Martin and her cohorts the stage for the evening by blasting through an all-too-short set that filled with straight up, high-energy rock & roll punctuated by a closing cover of the Cranberries’ Zombie which left everyone in the room hoping there were a few more minutes available for her set. There’s no question that Molly and her band made an imprint on the local scene that night. Keep your eyes open for a chance to catch them coming through town again, you’ll be glad you did.
